About a week ago, I shared a video with you about a patio that was behind a retaining wall where we were doing some water proofing. A comment was made to please keep you updated on the project status. So, here it is. Here's the update. The job is complete. I meant to do a shot in the middle of it, but we moved pretty fast on this project. So last time you saw this job, the ground was down and we had excavated behind the retaining wall where we were putting in our drainage and we were waterproofing everything. Well now, this paver patio is complete and you get an idea of what everything looks like and how it turned out.  We had an elevation change that brought this new patio up to the level of the deck stairs which I think looks great.  It actually had 3 more deck stairs coming down before,  so here's a shot of the finished paver patio.

Hi everyone! This is Phil and I want to walk you through this outdoor living space project. This is a warm inviting fire pit patio area that sits about 250ft off of the back of the house. We begin with a slate chip stone pathway that's coming right in through here as an entrance path.  We've got it lined with really nice landscape lights over from Volt Lighting which are available online. It's just a great quality lighting fixture that's less expensive than some of the premium manufacturers. They eliminate a lot of the sales and marketing and sell direct.  So you can buy them directly from Volt Lighting.

We wanted a natural and rustic feel, so we selected large Tennessee fieldstone step treads to look irregular and give it the feel that those stones were found on the property and were placed here.  We've got the stack stone seating.   Today we're giving you some professional tips and techniques to help you build an amazing backyard patio of your own and it's all about the base and nothing to do with the bricks.  This means we're building a cutlass paver patio and we're going to show you how to do the same. So, let's get into it.

Base Material

We're going to divide the base into three distinct categories, the first category is what we call the sub base and that is the raw soil.  How to prepare that? What to look for? And what you're going to need to know to make sure that when you lay your patio now, it looks the same ten years from now. The second category is what we call the imported base material.  That's what you use to separate the sub base from your pavers.  The third category of base material is your sand base or your screed rail, and there may be a little bit of controversy on this last point.

Week 1

We are about one week into a major renovation project and we are working on by far the most dangerous hillside we have ever worked on. I want to try to give you an idea of what we're working on. If you look at how steep the slope behind me is, so we've got a two-tier retaining wall.  We have our lower tier behind me that extends up about 6ft tall. This entire slope was very steep and covered in a rose or control plants that have large evergreen trees on it. We've created this middle level area which is 14ft deep and then we've built the second reinforced timber retaining wall. This middle terrace is going to go to the blue lines behind you. That is going to be a putting green.  This putting green is going to be a pretty awesome feature.  Around the outside of this putting green is going to be a rock or chipping area.
